Centropa

Centropa is a project of the Central Europe Center for Research and Documentation. Its goal is to use a variety of technologies "to create a window into Jewish history, and current events, in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union." The site includes access to the Witness to a Jewish Century, a searchable online library of Jewish family pictures and accompanying oral histories. The Contemporary Archive highlights Jewish communities today in this part of the world and offers travel tips. There are also book reviews, recipes, slide shows, and links to relevant sites. This is a rich resource for anyone interested in this part of the world.

Croatia

This site in English and Serbian has links to and contact information for Jewish communal organizations in Zagreb and a number of other cities.

Encyclopedia of Russian Jewry

“Rujen.ru provides an Internet version of the Encyclopedia of Russian Jewry, which is published in Moscow since 1994, giving a comprehensive, objective picture of the life and activity of the Jews of Russia, the Soviet Union and the CIS. The encyclopedia is structurally divided into three parts: 1. biographical information, 2. local history of the Jewish community in pre-revolutionary Russia, the Soviet Union and the CIS, and 3. thematic information on concepts related to Jewish civilization, the contribution of the Jews of Russia in various fields of activity, various Jewish social, scientific, cultural organizations, etc. The originally published volumes contain more than 10,000 biographies and more than 10,000 place names. The electronic version contains corrections and additions in the form of new articles.” This site is in Russian.

European Council of Jewish Communities

"The European Council of Jewish Communities (ECJC) is the networking agency of Jewish institutions and communities concerned with planning and co-ordinating action in the fields of social welfare, formal and informal Jewish education, leadership training and culture. Established in 1968, the ECJC comprises member communities and organizations in 37 countries." This site offers information about events and programs in the area of education, social welfare, and culture taking place throughout Europe as well as details on regional events and funding offerings. There is also an entire section on restitution for Holocaust survivors. Of particular note is the links section which provides a hypertext directory of Jewish sites by country throughout Europe. This is an excellent starting point for locating Jewish institutions in both Western and Eastern Europe.

European Jewish Association

“The European Jewish Association is the biggest federation of Jewish organizations and communities working all over Europe.” In addition to information about the group, the site has links and details about its member organizations.

Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary

Jewish Bratislava

“The Jewish Community Museum in Bratislava has launched a new web portal for the rich Jewish heritage of Bratislava, including an interactive guide to 28 sites of Jewish interest in the city.
The web site includes sections on three museums: the Jewish Community Museum, the state-run Museum of Jewish Culture, and the Arthur Fleischmann Museum, as well as the synagogue, the subterranean Chatam Sofer Memorial in the remnant of the Old Jewish Cemetery, and Bratislava’s current Jewish cemeteries.”

Jews in East Prussia

Jews of the Caucausus

Kedem: Jewish Cultural Center of Moldova

This Russian-language site describes the activities of the Kishinev Jacobs Jewish cultural center in Moldova.

Khazaria Information Center

Subtitled "A Resource for Turkic and Jewish History in Russia and Ukraine,” this is a comprehensive site for research in all aspects of this area study. Kevin Brook who maintains the site has included a history of medieval Khazaria and other useful resources. Of particular note are the extensive set of links to the Eastern European Jewish world arranged by country.

Kosher Prague

This site lists kosher accommodations in apartments, tours, and trips with Jewish guides, and sources for Jewish food in Prague in the Czech Republic. A set of relevant links is also provided.

Kurdi Jews

This Hebrew language site is dedicated to the preservation of the traditions of Jews from Kurdistan. The site features the history, customs, sayings, food, and holiday traditions of Kurdish Jews.

Litvak World

This site is devoted to the history of the Jews of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Of particular interest is the interactive map of its synagogues.

Lublin, Poland

This Hebrew language site with some material in English is dedicated to the history of the Jews in Lublin, Poland. There is material on families, the community and its leaders, a map, and other historical data.

Preserving Jewish Cemeteries

ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, Centropa and the Foundation for Jewish Heritage have banded together to create this site devoted to the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Central and Eastern Europe. The site provides curriculum and tourism materials and details about the group's activities.

Romania

This Hebrew language is dedicated to the history and ongoing life of Jews in Romania. It includes articles and a timeline.

Romanian Jewish Synagogues

“Join us on a digital voyage through 8 synagogues from Banat and Arad in Romania, and through the life stories of three generations of Jews that breathed life into them.” The site includes 3D digital tours of the synagogues, as well as excerpts from more than 80 “testimonies” by Jews from the towns, recalling Jewish life in these places as well as reflecting on the challenges facing their sharply dwindling Jewish communities today. All the material is in both English and Romanian.

Slovak Jewish Heritage

"The Slovak Jewish Heritage Center is joint project of the Bratislava Jewish Community and the Jewish Heritage Foundation – Menorah." The site, in English and Slovak, provides information about Slovak Jewish synagogues, cemeteries, museums and history along with tour information about Jewish sites in Bratislava and Slovakia.

The Association of Jews from Vilna and Vicinity in Israel

In addition to information about the events and activities of this organization, this Hebrew language site provides a great deal of information about Jewish towns, cemeteries, yizkor books, and monuments related to Jewish life in Lithuania. You can also search its library catalog.
